The National Exotic Hedgehog Rescue and Information

Site

Welcome to the National Exotic Hedgehog Rescue website. A central place to organize the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of all types of exotic Hedgehogs and their relatives. We specialize in African Pygmy Hedgehogs, Long-Eared Hedgehogs, Lesser Tenrecs, Greater Tenrecs and Common Tenrecs, although we will take in any spiny / prickly creature.

The rescue although setup by myself, truly belongs to the exotic hedgehog community as a whole.  As we are generally seen as a reasonable community we need to continue this and ensure that our actions do not adversely effect the already stressed rescue centers out there, especially the native hog rescues who are already under a lot of pressure from native hogs and in most cases not familiar with exotic hog care. We must also ensure that we always have the best interests of the animals we love so much at the centre of our thoughts. If we can manage the unfortunate hogs that are in need of help within the community, we shall go a long way to helping the breed and securing the future of exotic pet hedgehogs in the UK.

This website is the central hub that co-ordinates, rescues and re-homes for exotic hogs throughout the UK.  We rely on many volunteers around the country to give both their time and commitment, to help any unwanted, mis-treated or abandoned exotic hedgehogs and the relatives.  We are always looking for other experienced helpers to join our team of volunteers.  We need help from people willing to transport animals from people surrendering their animals to the approved volunteers, right the way through to people who are willing to take on and care for more difficult cases. The more approved volunteers we have around the country the better the future of these great creatures is going to be .

We are also looking for people who wish to become pre-approved as full time care givers of hogs that are ready for rehoming. There is an extensive questionnaire to be filled out.  This is to ensure that only the best possible homes are chosen for the animals that have been in our care. A lot of these animals will have not had the best start in life and it is paramount that they suffer no further stress. If you think you have what it takes to look after a rescued hog, then please feel free to copy our adoption approval form and send to us. We will then assess the details and let you know if you have been successful in being pre-approved.  If not we will give a explanation of why we feel you would not be suitable at the present time, and also suggest areas in which we would need to see a change. We are happy to re-asses at any point if the items are addressed.

For those who are successful we will add you to a list of people willing to rehome on a life time basis in your area. When a hog does become available you will then be contacted by ourselves to ensure your circumstances have not changed and arrange a meeting between the rescuer and yourself. This is an opportunity for both parties to get to know each other. For you and the hog to meet each other and discuss any concerns with the rescuer.  The final decision as to if you can re-home the animal lies with the rescuer in charge of the animal.  On agreement with the rescuer and on payment of a small donation to the rescuer (currently set at £40), you will be able to take your new pet home with you. Our rescue team will want to keep in contact with you and ensure you are happy with your new pet and also give you the opportunity to ask any question that may arise after the the animal has left the rescue.

If you have a hog or related animal you can no longer care for  then please contact us.  We can cover 90% of the UK  and 100% if you are willing to travel to one of our approved rescuers.  We will take on any spiky critter. We offer this 100% free of charge but as we rely of donations to help rescuers with medical costs, food and board costs ect, any donations would be highly appreciated. Although we will ask for as much information about the animal as you can offer, we will not push anyone on cases of neglect ect. and will not be critical of the reason you give for surrendering your animal. Our only concern is the ongoing welfare of the animal concerned.
